This work is constructed of five separate photographs. The alchemist and his lab is one photograph, his client, another. These two shots were done approximately 6 months apart. The right hand wall is an exterior church wall in Raleigh, the arched hallway behind was bought from Dreamstime. The mountains visible through the window was a shot I took in British Columbia. There were over a dozen additional layers used to adjust color and contrast, cover modern details and add in final touches such as shadows, etc.
